Heat Pumps Deliver, With Advanced Features You’ll Want To Ask About

When heat pumps were first introduced, they weren’t exactly the model of efficiency or comfort for all climates. But as time and technology have progressed, heat pumps have come far. Though traditionally not used as a form of heat for homes in extreme northern climates, recently there have been advances made to these systems that make them a great form of home comfort for both moderate and colder climates.

The new features available on most heat pumps today deliver better comfort in both summer and winter, with even greater energy efficiency. As such, heat pumps are a wise choice for more homeowners. The following are just some of the new features that heat pumps boast:

  • Two-speed compressors: The addition of a two-speed compressor to the modern heat pump allows them to operate in a more efficient manner. Depending on the amount of heating or cooling needed at a given moment, the compressor can either function at maximum capacity or “gear down” to a slower, energy-saving pace. These compressors also work well in homes with zoning systems.
  • Variable-speed fans: Heat pumps that have variable-speed fans make less fan noise and reduce cool drafts. These fans also help reduce operating costs.
  • Desuperheaters: Heat pumps with these features collect waste heat from the cooling mode and apply it to heating water. The desuperheater option heats water two to three times more efficiently than standard electric water heaters.
  • Scroll compressors: This type of compressor forces refrigerant into smaller areas than the standard piston-type compressor. By doing this, heat pumps with this feature can provide ten to 15 degrees more heat than heat pumps with standard compressors.
  • Back-up Heat: The addition of a furnace, ideal for heat pumps used in extreme cold situations, further advances the heat pump’s efficiency. Natural or propane gas, oil or even coal and wood can be used with this option to provide efficient and comfortable back-up heat.

The additions of such options to modern pumps have increased both their energy efficiency and their popularity as a home comfort option, even well into colder regions where heat pumps haven’t traditionally been used before.
