Attic-Sealing Strategies Give Terre Haute Residents A Solid Plan For Efficiency

The climate here in Terre Haute can cause problems for homeowners with unsealed attics. We see a lot of humidity in this region, which can lead to build-ups of toxic mold as well as structural problems that can cost you a pretty penny to fix. One of the most effective things you can do to reduce moisture in your attic and avoid these problems is to get your attic sealed. Not only will attic sealing reduce humidity both in the attic and throughout your house, but it will also help you keep heating and cooling costs under control.

Here are some signs that humidity is a problem in your attic:

  • Wooden structures, furniture or surfaces in the attic are warping out of shape or starting to rot.
  • Paint is bubbling up or peeling off your soffits or other surfaces.
  • You notice that shingles at the edge of your roof are bending out of shape or splintering.
  • Insulation in your attic is wet to the touch.
  • The ceiling, walls, or floor of your attic show signs of mold or mildew build-ups.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues in your attic, follow these five steps to seal it:

  • Check your roof for structural soundness and make any necessary repairs before dealing with the attic itself.
  • Close off all air leaks leading into the attic from the inside of the home (such as the upper floors) into the attic.
  • Install insulation with a high R-value to your attic and eaves.
  • Work with a professional to properly vent your attic.
  • Install rafter vents to the rafters, which should be near the attic floor.
  • If you have questions about attic sealing, or want to trust this important job to a trained professional, simply contact us and we’ll be happy to assist you.
