Three Very Good Reasons For A Thorough Duct Cleaning

Duct cleaning is an often overlooked, but essential, element of home performance and healthy indoor conditions. There are many reasons to invest in duct cleaning, but Paitson Bros. has three of the biggest possible benefits your household could derive:

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air is among the EPA’s top five health hazards. In the average Indiana home, indoor air is at least 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. The contaminants vary more widely than many homeowners suspect, and include:

  • Dust
  • Dust mites
  • Allergens
  • Microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria
  • Mold

These and other pollutants can result in serious health issues, including ongoing respiratory problems such as asthma and frequent colds, skin conditions and even chronic lethargy. Duct cleaning can remove pollutants from your system.

HVAC Efficiency

Ideally, ducts perform hand in hand with the HVAC system to distribute the exact amount of airflow the system produces. The reason ducts are usually made of sheet metal is because it provides a smooth surface to facilitate this airflow. When dust and debris build up, airflow capacity can decrease. This means your ducts aren’t able to handle the same amount of airflow they once were, and comfort is reduced, circulation can become sluggish, and your HVAC equipment will perform less efficiently.

Mold Control

Mold is one of the biggest culprits causing poor indoor air quality and structural degradation. In humid, moist environments mold needs only 24 hours to begin growing. Mold growing anywhere on your HVAC equipment, or in your ductwork, degrades your system and is circulated through your indoor air. This gives it the opportunity to grow in other areas of your house, including inside your walls and insulation.

Duct cleaning can improve indoor air quality by removing hazards from your system, while increasing efficiency. How often your ducts need to be cleaned depends on many factors, such as whether your home includes pets, but in general every 3 to 5 years is a good estimate.
