Duct Cleaning: How To Know When Your Ducts Need Attention

Your ducts are the circulatory system of your house. They’re responsible for keeping healthy, conditioned air distributed through every room. Dust, dirt and contaminants accumulate in ductwork, which can cause poor indoor air quality, decreased comfort and can even compromise your HVAC system.

Why consider having your ducts cleaned? The primary concern is indoor air. The EPA rates polluted indoor air among the top-five health risks in the United States. Duct cleaning can cleanse your system of debris and contribute to healthy indoor air.

Your ducts are located out of reach, inside walls and ceilings. If you can’t see them, how do you know when they need attention? Paitson Bros. has a few clues:

  • You notice unidentifiable odors.
  • You have high quantities of dust on surfaces and in your air.
  • Residents suffer health issues, especially ongoing respiratory issues like asthma, frequent colds or allergies.
  • You notice visible particles emitting from registers in the air flow.
  • You smell musty, or mildewy odors, especially around registers.
  • The ducts have insulation that may have gotten wet.
  • You notice mold growing anywhere on your HVAC system.
  • You’ve recently remodeled, finished an attic or basement or made an addition to your home.
  • Your ducts have not been cleaned for five years or more.

Duct cleaning can clear up mold, dust and debris in your ductwork that may be contributing to health issues and making your living space uncomfortable. Removing dirt and restoring smooth surfaces to the sheet metal of your ductwork can also facilitate airflow through your system, increasing your comfort and the life span of your equipment.

How often you have duct cleaning performed depends on several factors, but most households only require it every three to five years. It’s important to have professionals with experience and expertise perform the service, because ducts that are improperly cleaned can be even more dangerous than dirty ducts in the first place.

If you suspect your household could benefit from duct cleaning, give Paitson Bros. a call. We’re happy to help keep Wabash Valley homeowners comfortable and safe at affordable rates!
